1. Why do I need to top up my insulation?
Answer: Most homes now have SOME insulation in the roof/attic - but it has probably been there for some time and if so it is likely to be only about 4" (100mm) deep. This depth is certainly better than nothing - and will be presently cutting you fuel bills if it is undisturbed and still in good condition. However, in recent times much more has been learned about the fuel cost savings brought about by increasing that depth. The building regulations depth in new build homes from April 2007 is 300mm (12"). Increasing the depth of your insulation from 100mm to 300mm will save you an additional 32.6%.

4. What do 'R' and 'U' values mean?
'R' values - a higher 'R' value gives a better insulation performance.
Thermal conductivity value measures the ability of a specific product type to transmit heat
'R' value defines the resistance to the flow of heat of a specific thickness of a product.
'R' value = thickness divided by thermal conductivity.
'U' values - the lower the 'U' value the better the thermal insulation
The thermal performance of a building element (for example an external wall or pitched roof) is expressed as a 'U' value.
A 'U' value measures the amount of heat that the building element will allow to pass.
A 'U' value is calculated using the 'R'-values of all the building elements.
5. SOLARGUARD amazing foil insulation with an insulated core - more information!
Solarguard is imported from USA, and Green Planet Insulation are the sole UK distributors. There is nothing comparable manufactured or sold in the UK.
Solarguard is used by tradespeople as well as by individuals – and has a multitude of uses - between or over rafters, to insulate suspended ceilings, underfloor insulation, under attic floor joists, lagging cylinders, making blinds, in converting garages and sheds to workrooms (floor, ceiling and walls), home extensions on flat roofs, conservatories, caravans, boat engine compartments. We never cease to be amazed how creative our customers are with this product and how many times they recommend it to friends and tradespeople to their own customers.
Solarguard is only 6.5mm deep but does an insulation job equal to 80mm of fibreglass PLUS it has the qualities of convection, conduction and reflection of heat (and cold). It will keep your insulated area at an ambient temperature all of the year around avoiding any extremes of temperature
If you would like a sample before making any commitment then please email us at gpinsulation@aol.com with you name and address
When fitting Solarguard (by stapling it into place) the only important point to remember is to leave at least a small air space of 3 to 5mm or more on BOTH sides of the material - so don't fit it right up against (say) the plasterboard. In this air space, the conduction, convection and radiation of heat takes place and Solarguard can then work to it's optimum.
Solarguard is user-friendly, light, malleable, easily cut with scissors, nothing falls out of the middle, lovely material to work with and is easily stapled to rafters. You will really love it. One extremely important feature is that, unlike most foils sold in the UK, it contains absolutely NO PLASTIC so it has an A1 fire-rating and a UK BBA certificate is in process
We are extremely confident about the effectiveness of Solarguard, and it's user-friendliness, but if you are in any way dissatisfied or disappointed with the product on receipt, you are welcome to return it to us unused, for a full refund.
